Zaria Residents Appeal for Aid After Flood Destroys Cemetery

In Chikaji, a town in Kaduna State’s Sabon-Gari Local Government Area, residents are grappling with the aftermath of a severe flood that hit their community on Monday. The torrential rain, which lasted from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., caused extensive damage, washing away homes, property, and even parts of a local cemetery.

According to Alhaji Auwal Sani-Dambaba, the Village Head, the flood has affected over 200 houses. It also damaged parts of LEA Primary School and desecrated significant sections of the Ojo Cemetery. Although there were no casualties, many graves have been left open, and residents are now seeking refuge with neighbors.

Despite the scale of the disaster, there has been no support from government authorities or philanthropists so far. In response to the urgent need, Malam Suleiman Liman, the Chief Imam of Chikaji Central Mosque, has organized an emergency meeting with local wealthy individuals to address the immediate needs of the affected community.

One flood victim, Malam Ibrahim Ahmed, shared his gratitude that the flood happened during the day, allowing them to evacuate water before part of his house collapsed. He expressed deep concern for his family and called for quick intervention from the government and other stakeholders.

Community leader Alhaji Gafai Katsina reported that many victims are now staying with less affected residents or have returned to their parents’ homes. The worst-hit areas include Yan-awaki, Randa Kano, Chikaji, and Shika Dam.

The community’s resilience is evident, but they urgently need support to recover and rebuild.
