Troops stationed in Yobe State have once again intercepted a suspect involved in the smuggling of agricultural machinery. The suspect, identified as Abdulmumini Lawan, was arrested while transporting farm equipment that was intended to support local farmers under the state’s agricultural empowerment program.
Lawan, a 39-year-old driver, was caught by the troops of 233 Battalion in Damaturu. He was driving a Golf 3 Wagon with the license plate NFD 258 XA, carrying four thrashers. These thrashers were part of the equipment distributed by the Yobe State Government to farmers to enhance food production and ensure food security across the state.
Dahiru Abdulsalam, the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Yobe State Governor, confirmed the arrest. He stated that the suspect and the seized equipment have been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and action.
This incident marks the second time in a short period that an individual has been arrested for attempting to smuggle these vital empowerment tools. The Yobe State Government had previously banned the sale or unauthorized transfer of the distributed farm machinery and inputs. This measure was taken to ensure that the equipment reaches the intended beneficiaries—local farmers striving to improve food production in the region.
Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed security agencies to be vigilant and take decisive action against anyone found diverting these empowerment materials. He emphasized that such acts are not only illegal but also detrimental to the state’s efforts to achieve food security. The government remains committed to holding these saboteurs accountable and ensuring that the farm tools reach those who need them most.
