Police Arrests Suspects Over the Death of 21-Year-Old Unilorin Student

The tragic death of 21-year-old Awesu Mojisola, a student of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, has sent shockwaves through the Ilorin community and beyond. Her lifeless body was found on August 11, 2024, at a dumpsite in the Aleniboro area of Ilorin, and the circumstances surrounding her death have led to an intense investigation by the Kwara State Police.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, the investigation began after Miss Blessing O., Mojisola’s roommate, reported her missing on August 13, 2024. Mojisola had been out of contact since August 9, when she left her residence after receiving a phone call from a fellow student, Miss Timileyin. Timileyin introduced Mojisola to a man named Adebayo Happiness, a student of Summit University, who invited her to a night party in Ilorin. He also offered her ₦15,000 to act as his girlfriend at the event.

On the evening of August 9, Mojisola traveled to Ilorin with the understanding that she would be attending this party. However, shortly after her arrival at the hotel where Adebayo Happiness had arranged for her to stay, she began feeling uneasy. In her last communication with her roommate, Mojisola expressed concern, explaining that there was no party at the hotel, as Adebayo had claimed. Unfortunately, soon after this call, her phone was switched off, and all attempts by her roommate to reach her failed.

As time passed, her friends and family became increasingly worried, and Miss Blessing reported her missing to the police on August 13. The police immediately launched an investigation into her disappearance.

The investigation took a grim turn when, on the evening of August 11, a resident of the Aleniboro area, Mr. Olorunoje, reported that a group of laborers had found the body of a young woman at a nearby dumpsite. The body, which was found around 8:00 PM, was initially unidentified. When police detectives arrived at the scene, they found traces of blood near the left ear of the deceased, suggesting foul play. Her body was transported to the General Hospital in Ilorin for further examination, where it was confirmed that she had passed away. After being identified as Miss Awesu Mojisola, her body was placed in the hospital morgue.

As the investigation unfolded, the police quickly identified several suspects, including Adebayo Happiness, who had last been seen with Mojisola. The authorities made multiple arrests in connection with the case, and the investigation was handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for more discreet and thorough investigation.

The Kwara State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya, is determined to uncover the truth behind Mojisola’s death and hold those responsible accountable. The Commissioner has assured the public that no stone will be left unturned in bringing justice to the young woman and her grieving family.

The tragic incident has sparked widespread concern and calls for improved safety measures for young women, particularly students, across Nigeria. As the investigation continues, many are watching closely, hoping for swift justice and an end to the violence that has claimed the life of another promising young individual.

Mojisola’s untimely death is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers that many young women face. Her family, friends, and the community are left mourning her loss, and the public is urged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and work together to create safer environments for all.
