Nigerian Navy Rescues 59 Persons From Drowning, But Costs the Life of a Brave Officer

In a recent display of courage and commitment, the Nigerian Navy successfully rescued 59 people from a potentially disastrous situation near the Okpobo River. The vessel involved, the MV AMBIKA 4, was a dredging ship contracted to Sterling Global Oil Limited. It faced the threat of sinking in the turbulent waters near the river’s entrance. While the Navy’s swift action prevented the loss of many lives, the operation ended in tragedy with the loss of a dedicated officer, Lieutenant-Commander Gideon Gwaza.

The incident occurred on the night of July 29, 2024. The MV AMBIKA 4 was working in the Okpobo field, an area known for its challenging conditions, especially at this time of year. The situation quickly became critical as the vessel began to take on water. A distress call was made, and the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base in Bonny responded immediately.

Understanding the gravity of the situation, the Navy dispatched a rescue team led by the Base Operations Officer, Lieutenant-Commander Gideon Gwaza. The team included ten armed personnel and two interceptor boats. Their mission was clear: approach the distressed vessel and rescue all onboard.

However, the rescue operation was far from easy. The strong waves and turbulent conditions made it nearly impossible for the boats to get close to the MV AMBIKA 4. Recognizing the need for additional support, the Navy deployed another squadron of three boats to reinforce the rescue team. This was accompanied by a broader mobilization effort, including the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) GONGOLA, drones, and helicopters from both the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Air Force.

Despite the difficult conditions, the rescue team worked tirelessly for nearly ten hours, from midnight until 10:00 AM on July 30. Their perseverance paid off as all 59 crew members on the MV AMBIKA 4 were eventually rescued. It was a moment of relief for everyone involved, knowing that so many lives had been saved.

However, the success of the mission was overshadowed by the tragic loss of Lieutenant-Commander Gideon Gwaza. During the rescue operation, Gwaza accidentally fell overboard and was unable to be saved. His death is a stark reminder of the inherent dangers faced by those who serve in the military, especially in maritime operations where conditions can change rapidly and unpredictably.

Lieutenant-Commander Gwaza was more than just an officer; he was a highly trained combat diver, respected by his colleagues for his skill and dedication. His loss is deeply felt across the Nigerian Navy, and his sacrifice will not be forgotten. Gwaza’s bravery in leading the rescue mission, even in the face of such perilous conditions, is a testament to his commitment to saving lives and protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The Nigerian Navy has expressed its profound grief over the loss of Gwaza. In a statement issued by Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, the Director of Naval Information, the Navy honored Gwaza’s memory, acknowledging the risks and sacrifices that Navy personnel make daily. The statement emphasized that Gwaza’s dedication and sacrifice would forever be remembered as a shining example of the courage and selflessness that defines the Nigerian Navy.
