Blackout in Bayelsa as Vandals Damage Electricity Lines

Bayelsa State is currently grappling with a significant power outage due to the vandalism of two critical electricity transmission towers, T98 and T99, situated in the Igbogene community of Yenagoa Local Government Area. This unfortunate incident has disrupted the delivery of electricity to the state, which depends on the 132kV lines from Owerri in Imo State through Ahoada in Rivers State.

Governor Douye Diri has voiced serious concern over the increasing frequency of power outages in Bayelsa State. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, on Friday, Governor Diri lamented the return of darkness to the state following the collapse of these essential lines. He assured the public that the state government is collaborating closely with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to expedite the restoration of power.

Engr. Olice Kemenanabo, the Managing Director of Bayelsa State Electricity Company Limited, provided further details, confirming that T98 and T99 were indeed vandalized, leading to the widespread blackout. He emphasized that TCN officials are already addressing the situation and requested patience from the public as efforts are made to restore electricity.

Kemenanabo also highlighted the importance of community vigilance in preventing such acts of vandalism. He urged residents to report any suspicious activities near the electricity towers to security agencies promptly. This proactive approach is crucial to safeguarding the infrastructure and ensuring consistent power supply.

In his statement, Kemenanabo reiterated the longstanding request from Bayelsa State for TCN to establish a work centre within the state. He noted that having such a facility would significantly enhance the speed and efficiency of TCN’s response to emergencies like this. Since 2021, Bayelsa has been advocating for this work centre, recognizing its potential to prevent prolonged power outages and improve overall service reliability.

The recent vandalism incident underscores the critical need for such infrastructure and highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the state’s electricity sector. As the authorities work to restore power, the call for increased security and community cooperation remains paramount.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior near the transmission towers to help prevent future incidents. This collective effort is vital to ensure the stability and reliability of electricity supply in Bayelsa State.
