Rights activist and co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) advocacy group, Aisha Yesufu, has called for the impeachment of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In a recent post on X, Yesufu encouraged senators to take action against Akpabio, asserting that they would face no resistance in doing so. She pointed out that any attempts at propaganda would be futile in the face of widespread hunger, as the immediate needs of the people would drown out any political noise.

Yesufu’s statement came after Akpabio made controversial remarks about Nigerians planning to protest against President Bola Tinubu’s administration on August 1. Akpabio had mocked the protesters, suggesting they could go ahead while he and others continued “eating.”

Akpabio acknowledged the widespread hardship in the country but assured that it would be temporary. However, his comments were met with backlash, prompting Yesufu to call for his impeachment.

In her post, Yesufu wrote: “Dear Senators. It is time to impeach Godswill Akpabio. It is still one of you that will replace him as Senate President. You will not encounter any resistance. Propaganda cannot work on people that are hungry. The growling of their stomach will drown out the noise and they won’t be able to hear the propaganda.”

Yesufu’s call to action highlights the growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians and the urgent need for the Senate to address the leadership’s insensitivity to the plight of the people.
