Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, the daughter of President Bola Tinubu, has made a public plea to market women in Lagos, urging them to prevent their children from participating in the planned August 1 protests against economic hardship.
In a video message shared with market women at Dosumu Market, Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo emphasized the need to avoid protests, highlighting the efforts of the Lagos government and her father’s administration. She argued that the new government should be given at least three years to demonstrate its effectiveness before facing criticism.
Reflecting on the past, Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo expressed concerns about the potential for violence, recalling how the EndSARS protests, initially aimed at addressing police brutality, escalated when thugs attacked protesters and Nigerian soldiers intervened, leading to loss of lives and property damage.
“Prevention is better than treatment,” she said, urging everyone to warn their children against participating in the demonstrations. Her call aligns with broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to deter protests through meetings with religious leaders, traditional rulers, governors, and security agencies, all of whom have shown support for the government’s stance against the protests.
As economic hardship and rising food prices fuel public unrest, the government’s push to quell the planned demonstrations continues, with increased arrests of protest organizers and supporters.
