The House of Representatives has warned that they will push for the removal of the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, if the supposed attempts to harm the Dangote Refinery don’t cease immediately.
Philip Agbese, the deputy spokesperson of the House, expressed these concerns during a press briefing in Abuja. He emphasized that the lawmakers had already called for the dismissal of the leaders of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). According to Agbese, both the NNPCL and NMDPRA seem to be working against the interests of the Dangote Refinery.
Agbese mentioned that many Nigerians had canceled their planned protests against hardship but stressed that they still want Kyari removed if it means the refinery will operate smoothly. The House plans to investigate the conflict between Dangote Refinery and the NMDPRA as part of its duty to protect important national assets and economic infrastructure.
He said, “We’ve seen many efforts to discredit the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, causing panic in the country. The House has already directed the President to sack the NMDPRA’s CEO. If these attempts to damage the refinery project do not stop immediately, we will also call for the sacking of Mele Kyari.”
Previously, the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, led a team to visit the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals Company in Lagos. Abbas stated that this visit gave them useful insights for future legislative actions aimed at creating a more business-friendly environment in Nigeria, making it a more attractive place for both local and international investors.
