According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demonstrators set fire to its office, which is situated in the Sankara neighborhood of Ukum Local Government Area in Benue State.
On Wednesday, July 3, Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, issued a statement verifying the incidence. Sam Egwu, the state’s resident electoral commissioner (REC), provided this information.
The statement states that the attack took place at 2:00 PM.Youths from the neighborhood carried it out in protest of the bandits’ actions within their villages. These demonstrators set fire to government buildings, including the INEC office.
It read;
“Although no casualties were reported, the building has been extensively damaged. Office furniture and other movable and immovable materials, including 10 electric generators, 300 ballot boxes, and 270 voting cubicles, were destroyed in the attack.
“The attention of security agencies has been drawn to the incident, and they have already deployed their personnel to the area.”
