Enoch Gbinyiam, a pastor at Winners Chapel Church in Omuo-Ekiti, was sentenced to one year in prison by an Ado-Ekiti High Court on Thursday, June 13, for sexually assaulting a minor in his church.
Gbinyiam was charged with one count of sexual assault. Julius Ajiba, the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), informed the court that the pastor assaulted a church member’s daughter when she visited his home.
Ajiba explained that the girl often visited the pastor’s home to help his wife with household chores and to assist his children with their schoolwork. During one visit, Gbinyiam allegedly drugged a bottle of Fanta and gave it to the girl. She drank it, fell asleep, and later woke up bleeding from her private area.
Ajiba told the court that the police were notified, and Gbinyiam was arrested and charged. The offence violated section 2 of the Gender-Based Violence (Prohibition) Law, 2019. The prosecution presented four witnesses and two pieces of evidence to support their case.
The pastor, represented by his lawyer, Adeyinka Opaleke, pleaded not guilty. He called one witness and submitted one piece of evidence in his defense.
