A Nigerian woman named Damilola Matuluko was killed when a metro bus hit her in downtown Houston on Friday morning, May 31.

ABC News reports that the accident took place near the intersection of Rusk and Smith before 7:40 a.m.

The METRO Police Department stated that Damilola, who worked for the city, was in the crosswalk and had the right of way when the bus struck her.

Investigations revealed that the traffic light turned green, and the bus made a turn onto Rusk, hitting and killing Damilola. The bus was being operated by First Transit. Police mentioned that the driver, who was working under contract, is cooperating with the investigation. There were two passengers on the bus, but no one else was injured.

Officials identified the victim as Damilola Matuluko, who had worked for the city’s HR Operations Employee Relations team since 2023.

“Although Damilola had only been with the HR Department for a short time, she had become a beloved and impactful team member. She will be sincerely missed by her colleagues in the City of Houston,” COH HR Director Jane Cheeks said in a statement.

Her friends and family members have taken to social media to mourn her demise.
