Oshiomhole Accuses Obaseki of Forcing Philip Shaibu to Join APC

In a recent political rally at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Senator Adams Oshiomhole made strong accusations against Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki. Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North in the Senate, claimed that the frustrations faced by the Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, under Obaseki’s leadership, forced him to decamp to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Oshiomhole, this is a unique situation where a deputy governor was left with no option but to leave his party due to ill-treatment from the governor. Shaibu’s defection to the APC has caused a stir in Edo’s political scene, especially with the upcoming governorship election on September 21.

Oshiomhole also accused Governor Obaseki of mismanaging state funds, claiming that federal allocations meant for development projects in Edo were instead pocketed by the governor. This has raised concerns among voters as they prepare to head to the polls.

The battle for the governorship seat is expected to be tough, with the main contenders being Monday Okpebholo of APC, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Olumide Akpata of Labour Party (LP). The political tension between Obaseki and his former deputy has added another layer of intrigue to this election.

Oshiomhole also alleged that a police officer attached to their party’s governorship candidate was killed, adding to the insecurity around the election. Despite this, Obaseki has refused to sign a peace agreement aimed at ensuring a safe and fair election.

The relationship between Obaseki and Shaibu has been rocky for some time, leading to the impeachment of Shaibu by the Edo State House of Assembly. However, Shaibu was reinstated as deputy governor by an Appeal Court in Abuja, but tensions have remained high.

As the people of Edo State prepare to decide their next leader, the rivalry between Obaseki and Shaibu is expected to play a significant role in shaping the outcome of the election.
