Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, has openly criticized the government of President Bola Tinubu for what he calls irresponsible and wasteful spending. As Nigeria grapples with a severe hunger crisis, with 38 million people at risk of extreme poverty, Obi has called for a more careful use of the nation’s limited resources.

In an interview with News Central TV, Obi outlined examples of the government’s extravagant spending, including the purchase of a new presidential jet for $100 million, ₦21 billion spent on renovating the vice president’s lodge, and ₦15 billion on a new clinic for the National Assembly. He pointed out that these expenses are not only unnecessary but also insensitive, given the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

“You cannot ask people to fast while you are feasting,” Obi said, stressing the gap between the leaders and the citizens. He believes that the Federal Government should prioritize important sectors like health, education, poverty alleviation, and security instead of focusing on luxurious projects.

Nigeria, known as the poverty capital of the world, is facing major challenges in human and food security, according to Obi. He suggested that investing in agriculture could be a key solution to the country’s issues, as it would help address hunger, reduce unemployment, and control inflation.

Looking forward, Obi hinted at the possibility of joining forces with other opposition parties to provide a united front against the current administration. He expressed hope that by working together, they can offer solutions to the country’s widespread hunger and insecurity ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
