Father Speaks Out After Tragic Police Shooting of Kwara Polytechnic Student

On September 4, 2024, Abdulqoyyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a 21-year-old student from Kwara State Polytechnic, was fatally shot by police in Ilorin. His father, Muslem Abdulyekeen Ayinla, has now shared the heartbreaking details of his son’s death.

Muslem, 43, was engaged in a community meeting when he received a distressing call that his son had been in an accident. Rushing to the scene, he found out Abdulqoyyum had been shot by the police in the GRA area of Ilorin. Despite the urgent medical attention his son received, including several pints of blood and emergency care, Abdulqoyyum succumbed to his injuries early the next morning.

The tragedy didn’t end there. Muslem struggled with medical expenses and faced delays in burying his son due to hospital requirements. Following Abdulqoyyum’s death, students from the polytechnic took to the streets, protesting against police harassment and demanding justice for their fellow student.

Muslem’s account reveals that a survivor from the incident has identified the police officers involved. These officers are now under investigation in Abuja. Muslem has called this tragic event a reflection of a deeper problem in Nigeria, urging for justice and accountability to prevent such injustices in the future.
