Eguavoen Returns as Interim Coach as Nigeria Faces Benin in Crucial AFCON Qualifier

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has once again found itself in a difficult situation, leading to the return of a familiar face to guide the Super Eagles. After a failed attempt to hire Bruno Labbadia due to unresolved contractual issues, Augustine ‘Cerezo’ Eguavoen has been called back for his fourth stint as interim coach. Eguavoen will lead Nigeria in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Many fans, including podcaster and digital marketer Nwosu Michael Izuchukwu, are skeptical of this move. “Cerezo is back as interim manager, but I don’t have high hopes,” Izuchukwu says. “This option hasn’t worked in the past, and I doubt it will now. We have one of the most talented squads in Africa, and we need the right coach to harness that potential.”

Aside from the coaching drama, Nigeria’s preparations for the game against Benin have been overshadowed by off-field issues. Star striker Victor Osimhen has finally joined the team after a temporary loan move from Napoli to Galatasaray. Another key player, Ademola Lookman, has faced his own uncertainties, with reports linking him to Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal.

Despite these distractions, the focus is now on Saturday’s game, which pits Nigeria against Benin’s coach, Gernot Rohr. Rohr, who previously managed the Super Eagles, led Benin to a historic 2-1 victory over Nigeria in June. Now, with revenge on their minds, the Super Eagles will be determined to get back on top.

Rohr acknowledges that Nigeria is no easy team to beat. “We defeated Nigeria three months ago, but they will be seeking revenge, and that will make them dangerous,” he remarked.

As the Super Eagles prepare for this crucial match, fans remain cautiously optimistic. “If our best players focus on the game and give their all for the team, I believe we can win,” Izuchukwu adds.

The stakes are high, and Eguavoen has a lot to prove. Will this be a successful return for him, or will Gernot Rohr’s Benin spoil the party once again? All eyes will be on Uyo this weekend to see if Nigeria can secure the victory they need.
