A 23-year-old journalist from Kumasi, Ghana, has made headlines by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest time hugging a tree. Abdul Hakim Awal took on this unique challenge, embracing a tree for an incredible 24 hours and 21 minutes outside the Kumasi Cultural Centre.

The previous record, held by Ugandan environmental activist Faith Patricia Ariokot, was set earlier this year at 16 hours. Abdul’s achievement was not just about breaking records; it was a powerful statement aimed at raising awareness about the importance of nature conservation in Ghana.

To further emphasize his commitment to the environment, Abdul pledged to plant a new tree for every minute he spent hugging the tree. This commitment means 1,461 trees will be planted in honor of his record attempt. Remarkably, Abdul was not allowed any breaks during his attempt. According to the Guinness World Records (GWR), he had to remain standing with his arms continuously wrapped around the tree for the entire duration.

Now that the record has reached the 24-hour mark, it is officially classified as a ‘marathon’ tree hug. This new classification means that future challengers will be permitted breaks, totaling up to two hours per day, to prevent the harmful effects of sleep deprivation.

Interestingly, Abdul is not the only Ghanaian to set a tree-hugging record this year. Earlier, a forestry student named Abubakar Tahiru set a record for the most trees hugged in one hour, totaling 1,123 trees.

While Abdul’s achievement has been celebrated by many, it has also sparked some humorous reactions on social media. Some users on X (formerly Twitter) have questioned the significance of a tree-hugging record, with some Nigerians playfully teasing Ghanaians for attempting “any kind of records.”

Abdul’s dedication to nature conservation, however, shines through, and his record serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our natural environment.
