UNICAL Law Student Honors Slain Abuja Crossdresser in Final Year Project

In a touching tribute, Obinna Joseph Okwesili, a law student from the University of Calabar (UNICAL), has dedicated his final year project to the late Chantelle, a well-known crossdresser from Abuja. Chantelle, whose real name was Ifeanyi Chukwu-Agah Benedict, was tragically murdered in Abuja, with his body discovered on the Katampe-Mabushi Expressway on August 8, 2024.

Chantelle, also known by the nickname “Abuja Area Mama,” was a significant figure in the LGBTQ+ community. His untimely death shocked many, drawing attention to the challenges faced by gender non-conforming individuals in Nigeria.

Okwesili announced the dedication of his project on Wednesday, August 28. His research examines a decade of the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act in Nigeria, a law that has had far-reaching consequences for the LGBTQ+ community. By dedicating his work to Chantelle, Okwesili not only honors his memory but also highlights the ongoing struggles for equality and justice in the country.

 He wrote,

“Finished my final year project today and thought it is most meritorious to be dedicated to Abuja Area Mama whose life, though different, was fullest in its living. Rest well, Ifeanyi Benedict (Chantelle)”
