In a devastating turn of events, the Iwari and Olagagbenea communities in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State have been struck by tragedy. Over the weekend, suspected herders invaded these peaceful communities, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

The attacks began in Iwari village, where one person was killed, and several others were injured. The violence did not stop there; the attackers proceeded to Olagagbenea community, where they killed five more people. These shocking incidents have left the local population in fear, as the armed attackers are reportedly surrounding several villages in the area.

One of the residents, who chose to remain anonymous, shared that the attackers have been targeting people in their homes and farms, making it increasingly difficult for them to feel safe. The situation has escalated to a point where over 2,000 people have been displaced from their homes, with many villages completely deserted.

The Caretaker Committee Chairman of Agatu LGA, Phillip Ebenyakwu, confirmed the attacks and expressed his deep concern over the ongoing violence. He described the situation as unbearable, with the attackers killing, stealing, looting, and then fleeing. The displaced residents are now in desperate need of assistance, as the relief materials provided by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) are insufficient to meet their needs.

Security agencies have been informed of the situation, and efforts are being made to address the violence. However, the challenge remains in managing the large number of displaced people, many of whom have lost everything in the attacks.
