Troops Arrest Crime Leaders, Terrorists, and Killers of Traditional Ruler in Taraba State

In a major operation across Taraba State, troops from the 6 Brigade/Sector 3 Operation WHIRL STROKE, working alongside other security forces, have made several arrests of criminals, terrorists, and kidnappers who have been terrorizing different parts of the state. These coordinated efforts aim to restore peace and security to the region.

One of the biggest breakthroughs came on August 21, 2024, when soldiers arrested Mela Selim, a notorious leader of the Tiv militia. Selim is believed to have orchestrated the murder of the traditional ruler of Chanchangi and his son in Jankindo village, Takum Local Government Area. His arrest is seen as a major step in cracking down on violent crime in the state.

Days earlier, on August 18, 2024, the troops raided a criminal hideout in Takum LGA, leading to the capture of a suspected kidnapper named David Musa. According to preliminary investigations, Musa is linked to a well-known kidnap ring led by a man called “Skin the Body.” Musa is now under investigation as security forces seek to learn more about the network’s operations.

Further successes came on August 20, 2024, when soldiers apprehended two suspected gunrunners, James Nuhu and Dan-Asabe Ango, in Wukari LGA. The duo confessed to taking part in various criminal activities and revealed the identity of their weapons handler, Ibrahim Philemon. A swift raid on Philemon’s house led to the discovery of a safe filled with ammunition and several weapons.

In another operation, security forces caught two members of the Konyo-led Tiv militias traveling along the Takum-Katsina-Ala Road. The suspects, Fidelis Nyitar and Isaiah Ioraa, were reportedly en route to acquire supplies for their militia. They are currently being questioned as investigations continue.

During a patrol in the Ussa LGA communities of Lissam, Kuruku, and Kwesati, soldiers encountered an ambush by terrorists. The troops responded with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat into the bush. As the soldiers pursued the fleeing terrorists, they found traces of blood and recovered an AK-47 rifle, a locally-made gun, and motorcycles.

The success of these operations has been attributed to the strong support and credible information provided by the local people. The commander of the 6 Brigade expressed his gratitude to the citizens of Taraba for their assistance and encouraged continued cooperation to help bring lasting peace to the area.

The military remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of the region, and efforts to track down other criminals are ongoing.
