U.S. policy firm to engage Congress, Trump administration over INEC decision on ADC

A U.S.-based policy group, Von Batten-Montague York L.C, has said it will reach out to members of the U.S. Congress and the administration of Donald Trump over the recent decision involving Nigeria’s electoral body and the African Democratic Congress.

This comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission earlier suspended official dealings with the party and removed recognition of its leadership while a court case is still ongoing.

The move has raised concerns about how it could affect preparations for Nigeria’s next presidential election.

In a statement released on Friday, the firm warned that INEC’s decision may limit political participation, saying it has left a major opposition party in an uncertain position at an important time.

The group explained that suspending recognition of the party’s leadership has effectively put the ADC on hold as it prepares for the upcoming election.

It added that this situation may make it difficult for the party to organise properly and fully take part in the democratic process.

The firm also warned that such actions could reduce public trust in the electoral system, stressing that transparency and independence are key to credible elections.

It stated that Nigerians expect free and fair elections, and any step that disrupts political activities or creates doubt about electoral fairness should be handled quickly and openly.

The organisation highlighted Nigeria’s importance on the global stage, describing it as Africa’s largest democracy and an important partner to the United States in security, economy, and counterterrorism efforts.

According to the firm, the credibility of Nigeria’s elections is not only important locally but also has international impact.

It said it would present its concerns to U.S. lawmakers and the Trump administration so the issue can gain global attention.

The group also called on Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that future elections in Nigeria are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner that truly reflects the will of the people.
