‘My mum told me to reject AFCON title’ – Hakimi backs Senegal’s victory

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has refused to accept the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, saying his team did not earn it on the pitch. His stance came after Morocco’s defeat by Senegal in the tournament final.

Hakimi revealed that his mother advised him to reject the trophy, and he urged his teammates to follow suit. He stressed that Morocco had a chance to win but fell short against a deserving opponent.

The defender acknowledged Senegal’s performance, saying the team beat Morocco fairly and deserved the victory. He warned against actions that could diminish Senegal’s achievement or hard work.

“I respect the Confederation of African Football decision but cannot accept a trophy we didn’t win fairly,” Hakimi said, highlighting his commitment to sporting integrity over formal rulings.

Morocco had been favorites for the tournament, but Senegal’s consistent play earned them praise. Despite a CAF Appeal Board ruling awarding the title to Morocco due to Senegal’s walk-off, Hakimi refused recognition.

The Senegalese Football Federation has stated its intention to appeal the CAF decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, continuing the dispute over the rightful 2025 AFCON champions.
