Russia has introduced new health guidelines that suggest women who do not want children should be referred to psychologists for counselling. The policy is part of updated reproductive health checks.
Under the new approach, doctors are expected to ask women about their plans regarding childbirth. If a woman expresses no interest, she may be directed to a medical psychologist for support.
The move is aimed at encouraging a more positive view of parenthood as the country faces a steady decline in population.
Vladimir Putin has repeatedly raised concerns about the falling birth rate, warning that it could pose serious long-term challenges for the nation.
Russia’s fertility rate is currently around 1.4 children per woman, which is below the level needed to maintain population stability, according to experts.
To address the issue, the government has also introduced policies such as stricter abortion laws and incentives to encourage families to have more children.
