Lawyers ask CJN to refer NBA President, Osigwe to LPPC for ‘publicly reprimanding’ judge

A group of lawyers under the Nigerian Law Society has asked Kudirat Kekere-Ekun to refer Afam Osigwe to the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee. They accused him of publicly criticising a judge instead of using proper legal channels.

The issue began after a courtroom incident involving Mohammed Umar, who reportedly asked a lawyer to kneel during proceedings. The action sparked reactions, with the Nigerian Bar Association condemning the judge’s conduct.

However, the NLS argued that Osigwe’s public response undermined the authority of the judiciary. The group stated that such matters should be handled through the National Judicial Council rather than through public statements.

The association has now called for an investigation and possible sanctions, warning that professional discipline among lawyers must be upheld. The situation has added to ongoing debates about conduct and accountability within Nigeria’s legal system.
