Sultan of Sokoto asks Muslims to look for Sallah moon on Wednesday

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims across Nigeria to look out for the crescent moon that signals the end of Ramadan. The moon sighting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

According to a statement from the Sultanate Council, the date marks the 29th day of Ramadan, making it the appropriate time to search for the Shawwal moon. Muslims who sight the moon are encouraged to report it through their local leaders for confirmation.

The appearance of the new moon will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr, a celebration that follows the completion of fasting. It is one of the most important festivals in the Islamic calendar.

As the spiritual leader of Muslims in Nigeria, the Sultan officially declares the start and end of Ramadan based on verified sightings. His announcement will determine when Eid celebrations begin nationwide.
