NATO faces ‘very bad’ future without support to reopen Hormuz Strait – Trump

Donald Trump has warned that the future of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization could be in danger if member countries fail to support efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The key waterway has been disrupted during the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking during an interview with the Financial Times, Trump said NATO could face serious consequences if allies refuse to assist the United States in protecting the vital oil route. The strait is one of the world’s most important channels for global energy transport.

The disruption has already affected global oil supply and pushed energy prices higher. Trump noted that European countries benefit greatly from oil shipments passing through the Gulf and should therefore contribute more to efforts aimed at restoring safe maritime movement.

The U.S. leader also revealed that Washington is currently discussing with several nations about possible support to reopen the strait. He added that a planned meeting with Xi Jinping in Beijing could be postponed as diplomatic talks continue over the crisis.
