Trump insists cartels run Mexico as Sheinbaum rejects US action

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has again criticized Mexico’s leadership, claiming that powerful drug cartels are effectively controlling the country. Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One, Trump said the Mexican government should take stronger action to eliminate criminal groups.

Trump said he had offered U.S. assistance to deal with the cartels but alleged that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected the proposal. Sheinbaum confirmed that her administration declined any foreign military intervention, stating that Mexico would handle its security challenges independently.

Meanwhile, Mexican authorities recently carried out a major operation against drug trafficking networks. Security forces seized substances believed to be fentanyl and arrested several suspects during raids in Colima state, as part of ongoing efforts to stop the spread of the dangerous opioid.

The crackdown also involved federal agencies and military units working together to dismantle cartel operations. The developments come amid continued tensions between Washington and Mexico over strategies to combat organized crime and drug trafficking.
