The Akwa Ibom State Judiciary has started steps to introduce Artificial Intelligence into court proceedings to improve efficiency. The initiative follows a training programme where technical teams installed audio capture and transcription tools in selected courtrooms for the pilot phase.
According to Ekaete Fabian-Obot, the technology will help speed up case management and support legal research. She explained that while AI can assist with documentation and administration, final judicial decisions will always remain the responsibility of judges.
The system is expected to reduce the heavy workload associated with manual note-taking in court. By using AI-powered transcription, court proceedings can be recorded and converted into accurate written records within a short period.
The project is being implemented with support from the National Judicial Institute and technology firm LexScript AI. Akwa Ibom is one of six states selected for the pilot programme aimed at modernising Nigeria’s justice sector.
