“Nigerian Government Grants MTN and Others Licenses for Electricity Generation”

The Nigerian government has granted electricity generation permits to MTN Communications Nigeria and several other companies, including Havenhill Synergy and Golden Penny Power Limited. These companies will be responsible for generating their own power through mini-grids, rather than relying on the national grid.

MTN has been authorized to build four power plants across Lagos, with a combined capacity of 15.94 megawatts. Golden Penny Power will also build six gas plants across Oyo, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos, with a total capacity of 100 megawatts.

Other companies like Armilo Plastics, SweetCo Foods, and West African Ceramics have also been allowed to generate captive power, which means they will use the electricity they generate for their own needs.

The permits were issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in the first quarter of 2024 as part of efforts to improve electricity supply in Nigeria. A total of nine permits were issued, with a combined capacity of 52.57 megawatts. Additionally, NERC approved three mini-grid permits and two registration certificates during this period, encouraging the development of renewable energy solutions in specific areas.
