Nigeria can still make 2026 World Cup playoff ahead of DR Congo – NSC boss

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, said Nigeria still has a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite DR Congo being listed in the playoff fixtures. He clarified that FIFA has not yet delivered a final ruling on Nigeria’s eligibility protest.

Nigeria lodged a formal complaint after losing to DR Congo in a playoff decided by penalties, alleging the opposition fielded ineligible players. Dikko emphasized that DR Congo’s inclusion in the fixtures does not mean Nigeria’s protest has been rejected.

The NSC boss assured Nigerians that FIFA normally communicates sensitive rulings directly to involved parties before making public announcements. He encouraged patience while awaiting the verdict that could restore Nigeria’s playoff hopes.

If FIFA rules in Nigeria’s favor, the Super Eagles could replace DR Congo in the intercontinental playoffs, giving them another opportunity to compete for a spot at the World Cup in 2026.
