Russia warns Finland it will respond if Finland resumes hosting nuclear weapons

Russia has warned Finland that it will take action if the Nordic country allows nuclear weapons to be stationed on its territory. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said such a move would be viewed as a serious security threat to Russia.

Finland recently announced plans to remove restrictions that prevent nuclear weapons from being hosted within the country. The policy change is intended to align with the strategy of North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which Finland joined in 2023.

Finnish Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen explained that the new policy would allow nuclear weapons to be transported, stored, or used in Finland if necessary for national defence.

Finland’s decision to join NATO came after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Since then, relations between Finland and Russia have become increasingly tense.
