It’s not just change of name’ – Atoyebi highlights benefits of new tax administration

Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, technical assistant to the NRS Executive Chairman, said the change from FIRS to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) is more than a name swap. She highlighted that it marks a strategic effort to modernize tax administration with technology, citizen-centered processes, and clearer laws.

The NRS Act and related reforms consolidate tax laws, streamline assessment and collection, and establish the Joint Revenue Board and Tax Ombudsman to improve coordination across federal, state, and local levels. Atoyebi emphasized these changes aim to create a fairer, easier, and more transparent tax system.

Digital tools are central to the overhaul, including electronic invoicing and real-time monitoring, which reduce errors and improve record reliability. The system also focuses on small businesses and informal sector workers, making compliance simpler and more accessible.

Atoyebi noted that the reform encourages voluntary tax participation and trust, stressing that taxpayers are partners in national development. She said the NRS’s approach prioritizes fairness, accountability, and technology-driven efficiency to transform Nigeria’s fiscal landscape.
