Panic as Benue records 250 suspected cases of Lassa Fever, 45 confirmed, 10 deaths

Benue State has recorded 250 suspected cases of Lassa fever, with 45 confirmed infections and 10 deaths, prompting urgent government action. The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Paul Ogwuche, visited isolation centres at BSUTH Makurdi and FMC Apir to assess the situation.

Health officials revealed that several health workers, including doctors, nurses, and support staff, are among the infected, highlighting human-to-human transmission due to lapses in infection prevention. The state has deployed surveillance officers across all 23 LGAs for monitoring, contact tracing, and community awareness.

The hospitals emphasized the need for upgraded isolation facilities, patient monitors, PPE, and improved waste management systems. Molecular laboratories continue testing for Lassa and other viral diseases despite challenges like inconsistent power supply.

Authorities urged residents to report symptoms early and adhere to infection prevention protocols. Government officials assured support for patients and families, emphasizing free treatment and strict measures to contain the outbreak.
