FG: Nigeria ready for state police reform

The Federal Government has affirmed Nigeria’s readiness for state police, with President Bola Tinubu advocating for decentralised policing once constitutional amendments are passed. The move aims to address rising insecurity across the country.

Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, highlighted the importance of improved communication systems alongside security reforms, noting that timely digital information is critical during crises.

Lagos State Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro, stressed that local crimes cannot be fully handled by the federal police and that state police would enhance security at the community level.

Safeguards against political misuse of state police are planned, with constitutional amendments expected to provide clear operational guidelines and prevent abuse.
