INEC denies migrating voters from polling units close to FCT election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied claims that voters were migrated from their polling units before the FCT Area Council election. The commission clarified that no voter migration occurred in 2026, despite some voters having difficulty locating their polling units on election day.

INEC explained that its Expansion of Voters’ Access initiative in 2022 added over 56,000 polling units nationwide to reduce congestion. Approximately 6.7 million voters were redistributed at that time, but the split units remain in the same locations to enhance voting efficiency.

For the FCT, 411 polling units were decongested, redistributing about 580,000 voters to 1,156 units. INEC emphasized that recent reminders via text and email were solely to help voters find their assigned polling points and improve the voting experience.

The commission urged citizens to verify polling details ahead of elections and visit locations beforehand when possible, reaffirming its commitment to orderly elections and better voter service delivery.
