YEDC condemns attacks on staff in Taraba communities

The Yola Electricity Distribution Company has criticised recent attacks on its workers in parts of Taraba State, describing the incidents as disturbing and unacceptable. The company said staff members were harassed and assaulted while carrying out official duties in Jalingo communities, including Yagai and Kasuwan Bera.

According to the firm, the affected personnel were engaged in routine tasks such as meter installation, fault repairs, revenue collection, and monitoring prepaid systems when the alleged assaults occurred. Officials stressed that employees were lawfully performing their responsibilities at the time.

The company warned that attacking authorised utility workers is a criminal offence under Nigerian law and expressed concern about rising hostility toward its field teams. It noted that such actions threaten staff safety, disrupt power supply, and could damage electrical infrastructure.

YEDC urged customers with complaints about billing or service issues to use official channels rather than resort to violence. It added that continued threats could force service withdrawal from unsafe areas, while it works with community leaders and authorities to restore calm.
