E-transmission: It’s unfortunate Keyamo thinks CSOs don’t represent Nigerians – Obi

Human rights advocate Ene Obi has criticised Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo for suggesting that civil society organisations do not represent Nigerians. Speaking on Morning Show, she said such a view dismisses the voices of citizens who rely on CSOs to demand accountability and electoral transparency.

Obi’s remarks come amid protests by civic groups pushing for real-time electronic transmission of election results. The demonstrations drew participation from opposition figures like Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, highlighting widespread concern about electoral credibility and public trust in the voting process.

Although the National Assembly approved electronic transmission, lawmakers retained manual collation as a backup. President Bola Tinubu quickly signed the amended Electoral Act into law, a move that has generated mixed reactions among political stakeholders and civil society groups nationwide.

Obi insisted that public officials should be mindful of their words, noting that power is temporary and leaders must act with conscience. She added that activists would now shift focus to legal avenues, signalling that debates over electoral reforms are far from over.
