Iran petitions UN security council over alleged United States military threats

Iran has officially submitted a complaint to the United Nations Security Council, accusing the United States of issuing direct military threats and violating international law. The letter, dated February 19, 2026, was addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Council’s President, James Kariuki.

The complaint stems from a February 18 social media post by Donald Trump, which suggested potential U.S. military action using bases at Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford if Iran refused to “make a deal.” Tehran described the remarks as a breach of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter prohibiting threats against a nation’s territorial integrity or political independence.

Iran warned that the combination of public threats and the buildup of American military assets in the region raises the risk of confrontation, potentially destabilizing the Middle East and threatening global peace. Officials emphasized that these developments should not be seen as mere rhetoric.

Despite the allegations, Tehran reaffirmed its commitment to diplomacy and dialogue. Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani stated that Iran remains engaged in nuclear negotiations in good faith, stressing a preference for peaceful resolution over conflict.
