The Federal Government has ordered the shutdown of a mining site in Zuraq, Wase LGA of Plateau State after a tragic incident left 37 miners dead. The directive was issued by Solid Minerals Minister Dele Alake following reports that toxic gas exposure caused the fatalities.
Local authorities confirmed that dozens were also hospitalised after the early-morning incident. The chairman of Wase council said victims were working underground when they inhaled dangerous fumes believed to have come from an abandoned mineral pit.
Officials explained that the affected location is covered by Mining Licence 11810, operated by Solid Unit Nigeria Limited. A federal investigation team led by Permanent Secretary Yusuf Yabo has been deployed to determine what caused the disaster and recommend sanctions if negligence is found.
The minister extended condolences to Plateau governor Caleb Mutfwang and families of victims, describing the incident as heartbreaking. Authorities say updates will be released as inquiries continue and safety measures are reviewed.
