Man Arrested in Valentine’s Day Homicide in San Juan Capistrano

San Juan Capistrano — A 62-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing his estranged wife at their shared residence in the early morning hours of February 14.


Stephen Demaro is accused of killing Debora Demaro, 59, inside their ranch-style home on Laurelwood Lane in Orange County.


According to Sgt. Lizbeth Gwisdalla, officers responded to reports of a disturbance at approximately 6:30 a.m. Upon arrival, deputies entered the residence and located Stephen Demaro suffering from cuts to his arms.


Officers subsequently searched the home’s garage, where they discovered Debora Demaro deceased. Authorities said she appeared to have died from multiple stab wounds. Stephen Demaro was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being taken into custody.


Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive. While the couple continued to reside at the same address, authorities confirmed they were estranged at the time of the incident.


Property records indicate the couple had lived in the home for approximately 26 years.


Stephen Demaro is currently being held at the Orange County Intake Release Center in Santa Ana on $1 million bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, February 18.


The investigation remains ongoing.
