Commercial driver st@bs LASTMA officer with broken bottle in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has strongly condemned an attack on one of its officers by a commercial bus driver in the Ojota Interchange area of Lagos. The incident, which happened over the weekend, reportedly left the officer seriously injured after being stabbed in the fingers with a broken bottle. The agency described the act as violent and unacceptable.

According to a statement issued by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, the driver was initially stopped for violating traffic rules. The commercial bus, identified as a painted Volkswagen Caravelle with registration number EKY 693 YK, was allegedly operating along the Ojota–Ketu corridor with its passenger door left open while carrying commuters. Officials said the action posed serious danger to passengers and other road users.

The statement explained that when enforcement officers attempted to arrest the driver, he resisted and tried to escape by driving onto the road median. His vehicle later broke down, stopping his attempt to flee. In the process, the suspect allegedly grabbed a broken bottle from inside the bus and attacked the officers, stabbing one of them in the fingers before running away. The vehicle was immediately impounded.

The injured officer was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery due to fractures and heavy blood loss. The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the attack and confirmed that the police have begun an investigation to arrest and prosecute the suspect. He warned commercial drivers against disobeying traffic laws, stating that the agency remains committed to enforcing order and ensuring safety across Lagos State.
