El-Rufai will be punished for tapping NSA’s phone – Presidency

The Presidency has called for a full investigation into former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s claim of wire-tapping the phone of Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA). El-Rufai admitted during a television interview that he and others had listened to the NSA’s calls after learning that someone had tapped the phone line. He acknowledged that the act is technically illegal but claimed it happens regularly in government operations.

Reacting to the allegation, Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga raised concerns about national security risks. Onanuga questioned whether El-Rufai and his associates had access to wire-tapping facilities and warned that the matter could not be ignored. The spokesperson emphasised the need for accountability and a transparent investigation.

The Presidency stressed that no individual is above the law and that El-Rufai could face consequences if found guilty. Onanuga noted that any breach of legal protocols regarding phone interception undermines the rule of law and the security of sensitive government communications.

Authorities are expected to investigate the matter thoroughly to determine the legality of the alleged wire-tapping and whether disciplinary or criminal actions should follow. The development has drawn attention to the broader issue of surveillance practices in government.
