NNPCL moves toward commercial oil production at Eba, Ogun to join oil-producing states

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has taken major steps toward starting commercial oil production at the Eba oil well in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State. A technical team recently inspected the site to assess its readiness for drilling operations, following approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for full commercial exploration.

The inspection involved officials from NNPCL, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and security agencies. The team evaluated the facility, technical requirements, and overall preparedness for production. The delegation was led by Hussein Aliyu, Project Coordinator for Enserv, alongside several engineers and technical experts.

Governor Dapo Abiodun described the development as a significant milestone for Ogun State. He noted that oil production in the state would boost the local economy, create job opportunities, and increase federal government presence in coastal communities. Earlier geological studies had confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons in the area, and the state government independently verified that the oil well lies within its territory.

Security has remained a top priority, with naval personnel guarding the site for over 18 months to ensure safety. Stakeholders say the next stage will focus on regulatory approvals, environmental protection, and smooth commencement of operations. The project is seen as part of Nigeria’s broader effort to expand oil production beyond the Niger Delta region.
