Electoral amendment: Mahdi Shehu presents varied reasons senate’s reversed decision is deceptive

Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has criticized the Senate’s recent decision to reverse its earlier position on aspects of the proposed electoral amendment. According to him, the move appears misleading and raises concerns about transparency in the legislative process.

Shehu explained that the sudden change in direction has created confusion among Nigerians who are closely following electoral reforms. He argued that any amendment to election laws should be clear, consistent, and in the public interest, not subject to abrupt adjustments that may weaken public trust.

He further stated that electoral reforms are too important to be handled without proper explanation. In his view, lawmakers owe citizens detailed reasons for any reversal, especially when such decisions could affect the credibility of future elections.

Shehu called for greater openness and accountability from the National Assembly, urging stakeholders and civil society groups to pay close attention to the amendment process. He emphasized that strong and transparent electoral laws are essential for protecting democracy and ensuring free and fair elections.
