NELFUND has paid 265 tertiary institutions for 1.5 million applications – Sawyerr

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has paid approved student loan funds to 265 tertiary institutions across the country. This was disclosed by the Managing Director of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, who said the payments cover about 1.5 million student applications processed so far.

According to Sawyerr, the fund was created to ease the financial burden on students and ensure that lack of money does not stop young Nigerians from accessing higher education. He explained that the disbursement was made directly to institutions to cover approved tuition fees.

He noted that the high number of applications reflects the strong demand for financial support among students in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Sawyerr assured that the process is being handled carefully to maintain transparency and accountability.

Education stakeholders have described the development as a major step toward improving access to tertiary education. Many believe that consistent funding and effective monitoring will help the scheme achieve its goal of supporting students and strengthening Nigeria’s education system.
