Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, has awarded a posthumous honorary Doctorate Degree in Political Science to Nigeria’s late former president, Muhammadu Buhari. The honour was approved by the university’s Governing Council and formally presented during its 14th convocation ceremony held on Saturday in Katsina.
University officials explained that the award recognises Buhari’s long-standing role in Nigeria’s political development, his leadership journey, and his commitment to national unity. They also highlighted his contributions to strengthening the country’s tertiary education sector, which they described as a lasting part of his public service record.
According to the institution, the posthumous recognition is meant to reflect on Buhari’s impact on governance and nation-building, while encouraging current and future leaders to draw lessons from his life and service. The university noted that such honours help preserve important national legacies within academic spaces.
Speaking on behalf of other honourees, former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmad Rufa’i, advised graduating students to uphold patriotism, integrity, and selfless service. He urged them to use their education to promote peace, inclusion, and equal opportunities as the convocation also featured the graduation of students and the conferment of other honorary awards.
