NEDC laments death of journalists in Bauchi road accident, pledges support for victims

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has expressed deep sadness over the death of journalists involved in a fatal road accident along the Bauchi–Alkaleri road on Friday, February 6, 2026. The Commission extended its condolences to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Chapter, the Bauchi State Government, and the families of those affected by the tragedy.

According to reports, the accident occurred while journalists were travelling with an NEDC delegation during the commissioning and handover of completed development projects across Bauchi State. In a statement signed by the Commission’s Head of Corporate Services, Abba Musa, the NEDC described the incident as painful and heartbreaking, noting that the loss has deeply affected the media community and the Commission itself.

The NEDC disclosed that its governing board has approved full support and care for the victims of the accident and their families. The Commission stated that it has begun reaching out to the affected journalists’ parent organisations and family members to ensure proper coordination and timely assistance for those impacted by the crash.

The Commission also offered prayers for the speedy recovery of journalists who sustained injuries in the incident. The Bauchi accident has further renewed concerns about journalists’ safety on assignment, coming just weeks after a similar road crash in Gombe State that claimed the lives of several media practitioners.
