Why I rejected Maurizio Sarri’s advice to leave – Eden Hazard

Former Chelsea star Eden Hazard has revealed why he turned down advice from his former manager, Maurizio Sarri, who encouraged him to adopt the strict lifestyle famously followed by Cristiano Ronaldo. Speaking to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, Hazard said he preferred to live and play football in his own way rather than copy another player’s routine.

Hazard explained that during the 2018/2019 season at Chelsea, Sarri suggested he should model himself after Ronaldo’s discipline and off-field habits. While he respected the advice, the Belgian admitted he was not willing to give up simple pleasures like spending time with friends, enjoying meals, or occasionally having a drink. He insisted he always stayed professional but wanted balance in his life.

The retired playmaker stressed that he never aimed to become a copy of Ronaldo. Instead, he wanted to remain true to himself both on and off the pitch. Hazard said enjoying football mattered more to him than following an extreme lifestyle, adding that his happiness helped him perform naturally during his playing days.

Hazard enjoyed a successful season under Sarri at Chelsea, which later earned him a dream move to Real Madrid. However, injuries limited his impact in Spain, and he eventually retired in 2023 at the age of 32. Reflecting on his career, Hazard said his biggest priority was always to have fun and enjoy the game he loved.
