Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has backed his old club to win the UEFA Champions League this season, saying he does not believe any team in the competition can stop the Gunners over two legs. Merson made the claim after the completion of the group stage, where Arsenal finished top of their group and booked automatic qualification to the Round of 16.
According to Merson, Arsenal’s consistency and style of play make them strong favourites in Europe, even if the Premier League title race may already be decided. He explained that knockout ties played over two legs suit Arsenal well, as their quality and organisation usually show over 180 minutes.
However, Merson pointed out that domestic cup competitions are less predictable. He noted that the FA Cup, which is often decided in a single match and penalties, allows for more surprises. In contrast, the Champions League format reduces the chances of shock results when teams play home and away.
Under manager Mikel Arteta, Arsenal have impressed across all competitions this season, combining discipline, attacking flair, and defensive stability. With growing confidence and experience, many fans now believe the North London side could be on course for European glory.
