Landlord arrested for de-roofing tenant’s apartment in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a landlord, identified as Samuel Frimpong, over allegations of illegally removing the roof of his tenant’s apartment in the Mgbuoba area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The incident reportedly happened at Chief Chike Street and has sparked public concern over unlawful eviction practices.

The tenant, Anozie Tochukwu, said the problem began after his landlord informed him that his tenancy, due to end in January 2026, would not be renewed because of planned renovations. Tochukwu explained that although he had been paying his rent regularly, he requested a two-week extension after showing evidence that he had secured another apartment.

According to Tochukwu, the situation escalated on February 3 when his wife called to report that the roof of their home had been removed. Heavy rainfall later destroyed their belongings, leaving his pregnant wife and two young children exposed to harsh weather. He claimed properties worth about ₦25 million, including electronics, furniture, documents, medicines, and savings, were lost or damaged.

Confirming the development, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the landlord has been taken into custody and investigations are ongoing. She added that the suspect may be charged to court once inquiries are concluded, stressing that the police will not tolerate acts that endanger lives or violate tenants’ rights.
