SPL: Al-Ittihad fans burn Benzema’s jerseys over Al-Hilal move

Karim Benzema’s decision to leave Al-Ittihad for rivals Al-Hilal has triggered strong reactions from fans of the Saudi Pro League champions. Videos circulating online show angry supporters burning and tearing down Benzema’s Al-Ittihad jerseys, expressing disappointment over his late transfer move.

The 38-year-old striker was absent from Al-Ittihad’s 2-2 draw against Al-Fateh, despite being fit and available. The Tigers looked set for victory after Saleh Alshehri scored twice, but their hopes were dashed when Mathias Berger scored a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time.

Benzema left Al-Ittihad as a free agent after spending two seasons at the club, where he played a key role in their league title success. His exit followed a breakdown in talks over a new contract, as both parties failed to reach an agreement on improved terms.

Reports suggest Al-Ittihad offered Benzema a deal without a fixed salary, relying instead on image-rights compensation, an offer the former Real Madrid star reportedly found disrespectful. This opened the door for Al-Hilal, who completed his signing on transfer deadline day, securing his services until 2027 and sparking outrage among Al-Ittihad supporters.
